Unlike the abortive Captain Scarlet remake of a few years ago, Thunderbirds Are Go! uses a mixture of physical miniatures and CGI. In a move that's likely to make fans shout, "Yes, yes, yes!" the miniatures are being made by Weta Workshop, the people who did such incredible work on The Lord Of The Rings and King Kong. Their undeniable expertise has resulted in the loving and perfect re-creations of Tracy Island and the base on it, as well as in a variety of marvellously crafted cityscapes. The Japanese street in the trailer looks just terrific, like something straight out of a Godzilla film. The CGI is reserved for the elements of each story that are best suited to computer graphics, such as the characters. With the mixture of "live-action" sets and CGI characters, the end product is a much more visually exciting spectacle than a purely animated cartoon. After seeing this approach, audiences can only conclude that the creators of this series get what makes Thunderbirds so special.
