Top 25 Sitcom Christmas Specials

14. Mrs Brown€™s Boys €“ Mammy€™s Ass (BBC One, 2011)

Agnes€™s plans for the perfect family Christmas begin to fall apart when she learns that her son Trevor isn€™t coming back from his missionary work Africa. This is another sitcom that tends to polarise viewers, largely for the same reasons as Miranda but also for the amount of swearing and the fact that Agnes is played by a man. But it€™s one that I€™ve personally loved right from the start. This episode€™s got all the brilliantly crude humour of a typical episode but there€™s also a fairly dramatic undercurrent to it. Some of the plot points are a bit meandering and aren€™t followed up on but when it€™s sticking to the main plot of Agnes preparing for Trevor€™s return and the subplot of petty criminal Buster Brady having to butcher a live turkey, it very rarely puts a foot wrong. A bit scattershot but it largely hits the mark. Best Moment: The final scene where the cast sing Silent Night, ending with Trevor arriving. It€™s beautifully underplayed and actually quite moving.
