10 Best WWE Wrestlers Of 2016 (So Far)
2. Roman Reigns
The biggest lie the internet ever told was that Roman Reigns sucks.
One impartial look at what he accomplished over the first six months of the year, all the while the subject of intense scrutiny by critics, fans and those within his own company, reveals a wrestler who thrived in every high-profile situation he was thrown into.
There was the Royal Rumble, where he entered No. 1 and provided the framework for the match, his story the most significant in the bout. Then it was onto Fastlane, where he worked a brutal-yet-beautiful Triple Threat match against Dean Ambrose and Brock Lesnar. From there it was onto WrestleMania and a victory over Triple H for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
That match with The Game may standout to some as a black mark on his main event resume but when revisited, is a smartly built match hurt by the painfully obvious outcome. None of that is the fault of Reigns, who looked every bit the guy poised to dominate WWE for years to come that management expected him to be.
The AJ Styles series, featuring outstanding title defenses at both Payback and Extreme Rules, further proved Reigns was a Superstar capable of delivering against stars of different shapes, sizes and styles. He very well could have been overwhelmed by the talent possessed by Styles, but he was not. He looked like a worker who belonged in the ring with The Phenomenal One and was never outclassed or over-matched.
Another extraordinary match against a determined Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank, in which he lost the title he worked so hard to obtain, gave Reigns another near-classic to add to his resume of outstanding main event performances in 2016.
A suspension for failing WWE's stringent Wellness Policy may halt his momentum ever-so-slightly but a Triple Threat match against Rollins and Ambrose has all the makings of yet another Match of the Year candidate for Reigns, who has a penchant for delivering them over the last two years.
