In 1980s WWE, when wrestlers resembled small mountains more than men, it wasn't hard to imagine that certain illicit substances were changing hands backstage. 

This open secret became very public following the arrest of Dr. George Zahorian III. A former ringside doctor for the WWE, Zahorian was convicted of distributing steroids in 1991. It didn't take long for people to connect the dots. 

What followed were some of the most volatile years the promotion has ever seen. Vince McMahon was officially indicted by the federal government in 1993, charged with distributing steroids among his wrestlers. This was all rumbling in the background while he was still an on-screen commentator, which is insane in hindsight. 

A neck-braced McMahon faced the music in the summer of 1994. He was up against some serious firepower, including Hulk Hogan, who had agreed to testify for the prosecution. It was only when Kevin 'Nailz' Wacholz was exposed as an unreliable narrator did Vince survive.
