3. The Montreal Screwjob

Do we really need to go over the Montreal Screwjob again? Everybody knows the story of Survivor Series 1997. Some people even call it the start of the Attitude Era, and the moment that eventually led to WWE winning the Monday Night Wars. 

The instant ramifications of this decision - Bret Hart leaving, Shawn Michaels becoming champion etc. - pale in comparison to the long-term consequences. Without the Screwjob, there wouldn't have been a Mr. McMahon character on TV. The sad fate of Bret Hart. The death of wrestling accomplishment as a storyline driver and good guys as a value. Then there's all the times WWE have redone this finish, each one less impactful than the last. 

Just when it seems like the wrestling world is ready to move on from Montreal, somebody comes along with a new take or theory that reignites the entire debate. 

Who knew about the Screwjob? Was Bret really going to take the belt with him to WCW? What did Earl Hebner have for breakfast so he could run away so quickly? So many questions, so little time. 

Even after the best part of 30 years, it feels like we're never going to stop talking about Montreal. And it's still only number three on this list.
