9. The Curtain Call

Kayfabe wasn't exactly thriving in 1996, but it was still a big deal. That's why this moment from May 19th caused such a stir. 

The Kliq were a backstage group in WWE. Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Kevin Nash (Diesel), and Scott Hall (Razor Ramon) weren't just top stars on screen, but had an unbelievable amount of political power backstage too. Sean Waltmann (the future X-Pac) was also in the group, but he isn't really relevant to this story. 

When Nash and Hall agreed to join WCW, their buddies decided to give them a little send-off. At a house show in Madison Square Garden, the four men joined hands and bowed in front of a packed audience. There was just one problem. Someone was filming it. 

Michaels and Hall were babyfaces at the time, while Nash and Trips were heels. This flagrant flouting of kayfabe was never meant to see the light of day, so when it did, it was catastrophic. 

Poor old Triple H took the brunt of the punishment (for a month or two), losing his planned King of the Ring victory. In one of wrestling's great butterfly effects, this opened the door for 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin to win the tournament instead.
