10 Biggest Wrestling Scandals Of The 2010s
5. Honouring Jimmy Snuka
'Superfly' Jimmy Snuka is one of the most important wrestlers of all time. His pioneering use of high-flying techniques in the 1970s and 80s paved the way for the style we know today. He is, objectively, a wrestling legend. He also potentially murdered someone.
On May 10th 1983, a 23-year-old woman, Nancy Argentino, died after suffering apparent head trauma. Argentino was Snuka's girlfriend at the time and he was the only suspect in the death. Stunningly, no charges were ever filed against him and he was free to carry on as a global superstar. The Argentino case continued to be an ugly stain on Snuka's legacy until 2015. A 71-year-old Snuka was finally arrested and charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Unfortunately, he was battling stomach cancer and dementia at the time, so was deemed unfit to stand trial. Snuka died in January 2017 at the age of 73.
To the horror of just about everyone, WWE ran a heartfelt tribute package to Snuka. This would have been bad enough anyway, but the fact that Snuka had been involved in a murder trial shortly before his death pushed this beyond the pale.
