WrestleMania X8's opening contest saw Rob Van Dam challenge William Regal for his Intercontinental Championship. Mr. Monday Night was keen to impress, as this was his first ever WrestleMania.

The two men had incredibly clashing styles, with Regal a ground-based brawler and submission specialist and Van Dam a high-flyer. Van Dam was incredibly over, thanks to his daredevil offence and unique moveset. As for Regal, he could draw heat from a crowd like no one else. But this only played more into the story.

The match only ran for 6 minutes and 19 seconds, but the two wrestlers got a lot in. They told the story of Regal trying to use his brass knuckles and Van Dam trying to stop him, like the valiant babyface hero. RVD eventually managed to score the victory, hitting the Five Star Frog Splash to capture his first Intercontinental Championship.

It was a great match that cemented RVD as one of the major players in WWF's upper midcard, as both men did a solid job in pumping up the Toronto crowd and getting them ready for the rest of the show.
