10 Magical Moments WCW Doesn't Get Enough Credit For

DDP was genuinely emotional about the favour Randy Savage did for him in 1997...

Defiantly standing in the ring as a mountain of garbage rained down upon them, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall had formed the New World Order of professional wrestling, brother. As soon as the faction joined forces at WCW's Bash At The Beach 1996 pay-per-view, perception of the promotion began to change.

The wheels had already been set in motion by the unthinkable decision to go head-to-head with Vince McMahon and Monday Night Raw. Starting in September of 1995, Monday Nitro offered wrestling fans an alternative to the tried-and-tested formula thrown out by the WWF each week.

The formation of the nWo and introduction of Nitro were both magical moments, but they were far from alone when it comes to great moments in WCW history.

Yet, there are moments in the organisation's folklore that don't quite get the acclaim they deserve. So often the same old negativity is thrown out there when people discuss World Championship Wrestling, and that serves to gloss over the many thrills provided by the much-maligned company throughout the 1990's...

10. Convincing Lex Luger To Jump Ship

By 1995, names like Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage had jumped to WCW, but the fact still remained that Vince McMahon and the WWF were the market leaders. Business may have been down across the board for North American wrestling, but the WWF was proving an institution that was hard to budge.

Therefore, Eric Bischoff deserves a lot more credit for selling the concept of Nitro to Lex Luger. The entire grappling world was shocked when Luger, who was still on the active WWF roster at the time but working without a contract, appeared on the debut edition of Monday Nitro. Confronting Hulk Hogan, Lex instantly rekindled his main event career.

This was certainly opportunistic from Bischoff, but he reasoned years later that Luger wasn't promised much by WCW. He had to prove himself to the company before he'd be really welcome, making any jump from the WWF a big risk for the wrestler.

It was one that paid off, and fans were given a jolting moment to cement that first Nitro show as memorable. Bischoff pulled a fast one on McMahon with this signing.
