2. Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels (Survivor Series 1997)
There isn't much that hasn't been written about the events of November 9, 1997. Often referred to as the 'Montreal Screwjob', Bret Hart's WWE Title match against Shawn Michaels has become stuff of legend, and still stands out as one of the most unique main events ever. It's likely there were fans who weren't fully aware, but most had heard through the grapevine that Bret was headed to WCW, and this would be his swansong with the company, at least in Canada. Supposedly worried that Hart would appear for his competition whilst still his main titleholder, Vince McMahon conspired with Shawn Michaels and others to remove the strap from him. The company were extremely lucky that mass confusion stopped a riot from happening in the arena, people were seriously miffed and hurt by what they'd just seen. Nobody was more upset than Bret Hart however, who spat at Vince, later punching him backstage in the locker room. It was a sorry, sad end for one of WWE's greatest workers, and even though Bret has made peace with most people involved now, it remains a horrible moment in the promotion's history.
