Never before had the Royal Rumble Match meant so much. Often regarded as the greatest Royal Rumble Match in WWE history, the 1992 contest featured an historical moment from many perspectives when Ric Flair won the famous battle royal and with it, the previously-vacated WWE Championshp. Flair had defected from the NWA/WCW in mid-1991 and appeared on WWE television that Fall. Previously, big-name talents from the rival organization had been relegated to the mid-card or made into comedy acts not dissimilar to Dusty Rhodes. Because of this, it was a bit of a surprise for Vince McMahon to not only feature him at the very top of the card but to christen with him his company's most prestigious title in a match that also featured Vince's top superstars. For Flair to shine, even for one night, over WWE legends like Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, Ted DiBiase, The Undertaker, and Jake Roberts was a sight to behold and one that would not be revisited very often by Vince McMahon.
