10 Reasons WWE Is Incapable Of Creating New Main Event Stars

5. The Fans

Wrestling fans often criticise, with some justification, the inscrutable whims and impenetrable will of Vince McMahon - but they themselves are an erratic bunch.

Dean Ambrose's WWE Championship reign was well-received by fans - his ensuing title reign, less so. Fans seemed to change their tune - but it was hardly Ambrose's fault that career midcarder Dolph Ziggler was chosen as his first opponent. It was also hardly his fault that he was positioned as a cosplaying jester. The act failed to resonate at main event level, but you had to feel for Ambrose. He had been shot by both sides. The idea of support has been lost; Ambrose in-ring performances never dipped in the summer, but fans cooled on him when he needed it most. That a shinier new toy, AJ Styles, was standing by hardly helped matters.

It almost reinforced Vince McMahon's longstanding belief that his audience did not know what it wanted. Almost. Those fans have been very consistent with their rejection of Roman Reigns.

That said, those fans are playing into McMahon's hands by booing Reigns out of the building. He's still eliciting a reaction, something WWE can spin as a positive. Michael Cole via Vince McMahon doesn't need to acknowledge the jeers - he just needs to bang on about electric atmospheres, big fight feels. Reigns isn't a top babyface, but he still feels big time. Silence, however, cannot be spun.

There is one way to convey the message that Reigns isn't the big dog - and that is to convey no message at all.
