Starrcade 1997 is remembered as WCW's biggest event. There was magic in the air as Sting promised to batter Hollywood Hogan and take the cherished WCW World Title away from the clutches of the evil nWo. Eventually, that did happen, but not before a whole load of shenanigans that served to sully proceedings. Sting was actually pinned by Hogan, but the decision was overturned by Bret Hart following a 'quick count' by Nick Patrick. Hart then called for the bell as Sting had Hogan locked in his Scorpion Death Lock. The WCW crew partied in the ring, celebrating with the new champion. This was supposed to be a new dawn for the promotion, and would have been a perfect time to move on from the successful nWo domination over the past few years. Instead, the title was vacated. Sting's reign lasted around 11 days in length, but he'd later defeat Hogan in a rematch at SuperBrawl. As explored during an earlier entry, Randy Savage then beat Sting at Spring Stampede just a few short months later. Throughout 1997, Sting had been WCW's top babyface, but they badly undermined him with their shoddy booking into 1998. In essence, they destroyed him as a the top good guy.
