10 Things Lapsed Fans Think During WrestleMania Season

3. Why Is Everyone So Robotic During Promos?

During the height of stars like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior, fans were treated to brash, colourful and bombastic promos. All of those men had their formulas, that can't be denied, but they didn't sit and rehearse line after line before addressing the camera. Nowadays, WWE hand performers a script they simply must adhere to. That wouldn't be a problem if professional wrestlers were world class actors and actresses, but it's unrealistic to expect that of them. Putting things another way, would Steve Austin or The Rock have been as effective on the microphone had others been writing their dialogue for them word for word? Wrestlers are now expected to regurgitate the words of somebody else, rather than talking from the heart. This comes across loud and clear when watching promo segments on WWE television nowadays, it'd be impossible to imagine that those fans accustomed to a different style wouldn't pick up on that. There's a clear lack of fluidity to promos these days, even extending to the same old, 'please welcome my guest at this time' line that the backstage announcers use time and time again.
