10 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: Necro Butcher vs. Samoa Joe
7. Necro’s Real Reaction To THAT Samoa Joe Promo
After the Chikara incident, Joe cut a promo calling Necro Butcher a “pilled up” and reckless “bully”. He closed his stirring speech by saying: “The Necro Butcher is f***ing dead”. Yeah, that's a definitive statement, and there's no way the pair wouldn't wrestle/fight after he said that. Privately, Butcher was positively fuming at the promo.
Mad Man Pondo said Necro really didn’t appreciate what Joe said and would recite portions of the promo constantly before working. He was obsessed with it, and didn’t think it was a fair assessment of what had happened at Chikara. Butcher didn't take kindly to being deemed a bully, because he didn't believe it was a true reflection of what had gone down.
Regardless, Joe was fired up and wanted to hit back by defending Ring Of Honor. Admittedly, especially back then, there was an elitist air in ROH circles. Workers in Honor (and the fans following the company) viewed it as superior to anything else on the independent scene, and that certainly included the "garbage match" style that Necro and others worked elsewhere.
There was a proper disconnect between what ROH thought wrestling should be and what Necro Butcher wanted to do. Allegations that he'd bullied some trainees and thought he was a tough guy who could get away with whatever he wanted didn't help. Again though, certain others who are about to be named kept heaping more and more fuel onto the fire hoping to book a match between Butcher and Joe.
