Before coming back, Reigns had a decision to make.

He could've kept going as a babyface hero type who wasn't quite as popular with hardcore fans as WWE liked to pretend he was. Or, he could totally switch up his presentation, enlist Paul Heyman as a confidant, develop a heel-ish edge and do something drastically different. The latter appealed to Roman more.

When WWE asked him to explain his vision for the new character, Reigns said he wanted to be "the mob boss who'll go out there and do the hit himself". That's where his "Wreck Everyone & Leave" catchphrase came from, and Vince McMahon lapped it up. So did Heyman - he couldn't wait to be involved.

Reigns admirably noted that he couldn't produce such a change on his own. He needed an established heel sneak like Heyman to help re-shape his aura. There was nobody better-suited for the role, and Roman realised that straight away.
