6. Lex Luger Fails To Become WWF Champion WrestleMania X
With Hulk Hogan having left the company shortly after the previous years King of the Ring, Vince McMahon needed another hulking, tanned, all-American sort who could flex his way to the top of the card. Step forward, Lex Luger, an arrogant heel known as The Narcissist who was soon transitioned to a top babyface spot after slamming the no-good foreign menace of Yokozuna in a stars-and-stripes bonanza of a bodyslam challenge on the 4th of July, 1993. Initially planned as the winner of the 94 Royal Rumble, things started to change a little for Lex when he actually co-won that match with Bret Hart. That was the first sign that the WWF were realizing that their new top star wasnt really getting over as they had hoped. As Lex was set to challenge for Yokos WWF Title at WrestleMania X, with the winner facing Bret later on in the night, it was near-enough guaranteed that Luger would become the WWF Champion by defeating Yoko, and then all bets were off when it came to him and Hart in the main event. Sadly for Lex, hed lose via DQ against Yokozuna, with Yoko then dropping the belt to Bret to close out the show. Rumours still circulate to this day that the predicted Lex WWF Title win was changed at the last minute due to Luger blurting out the news of his upcoming win during a pre-WrestleMania bar visit. Either way, Bret was again given the ball to run with whilst Lex soon dropped down the card following WrestleMania X.
