Fans hoped for it, clamoured for it, and even dreamed of it. Still, those same viewers would be lying if they said they saw WWE's treatment of AJ Styles coming.

For WWE, the thought of making a main eventer out of someone who made themselves an icon outside of the promotion was cause for horror only a few years ago. But, times have changed lately, with WWE proving they're more than willing to put their support behind anyone who is "phenomenal" enough.

AJ's debut at the 2016 Royal Rumble was monumental.

All the tantalising dream matches that were possible caused wrestling fans to drool. However, there was still plenty of salt being taken with his arrival, as it was easy to assume the company would fail to capitalise on him - as they'd done with so many fan-favourites.

Thankfully, in a welcome twist, not only did WWE value him, but they pushed him to the moon. He managed to defeat John Cena, win the WWE Championship and became the face of SmackDown Live within his first year. Even now, he is one of the most valued performers on the roster.

If you'd told any wrestling fan in 2015 that the former TNA icon AJ Styles would be WWE World Champion in a few years, they'd have said you were dreaming.
