10 Times WWE Lost Their Minds

3. Roman Reigns Headlines WrestleMania Twice In A Row

I've already touched on the fact that Roman Reigns won the 2015 Royal Rumble despite the fact that the fans hated it, and the fact that Brock Lesnar was the unbeatable champion heading into WrestleMania 31. The plan, of course, was for Reigns to topple "The Beast," leading to his coronation as the conqueror's conquer, the number one man in the company, and the WWE Champion.

Heading into WrestleMania, though, fans hated Reigns. He was routinely booed despite his depiction as an out-and-out babyface, and things would only be worse in front of the hardcore fanbase that came to 'Mania. Shortly before the event, WWE's brass decided that they couldn't chance a Royal Rumble-type incident at WrestleMania. As a result, Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase during the Reigns-Lesnar main event and pinned Reigns to steal the title, and fans loved it.

It was an elegant solution to a self-imposed problem, but the decision-makers didn't decide to simply count their blessings and move on. Work immediately went into rebuilding Reigns with the hopes that he'd become the popular babyface they wanted him to be, but it didn't quite take. Reigns won the belt at Survivor Series, lost it, then won it again on Raw. Fans actually cheered him that time, but by the time the 2016 Rumble - where Reigns was forced to defend his championship in the titular match - rolled around, they hated him again.

Triple H won the Rumble and the title, setting up a WrestleMania main event featuring Reigns chasing the title once again. This time, though, things were different. Just kidding! They were exactly the same! Fans still hated Reigns, he was booed all the way to WrestleMania, and the main event of the show of shows was met with "NXT!" and "Nakamura!" chants. Reigns ended up victorious, and the backlash WWE feared the year before arrived in full force. Who would've guessed?
