10 Times WWE Sacrificed WrestleMania For The Greater Good

4. Twice In A Lifetime (WrestleMania 29)

Announced a full calendar year in advance, The Rock and John Cena's "Once in a Lifetime" clash WrestleMania XXVIII was a big-time money-spinner for the promotion and an all-round smart move, as while the match itself wasn't the Rock vs. Hogan-esque all-timer WWE may have been hoping for, it invoked a similar spirit. It was an appropriate generation vs. generation headliner for a card that also featured an instant classic in the Undertaker vs. Triple H Hell in a Cell bout.

The "Once in a Lifetime" billing told you this was the only chance you were ever going to get to see these men collide. This was it, fans: tune out or miss out on Cena vs. Rock forever.

Right?

Nah.

Rock vs. Cena II went down at WrestleMania 29. It came about when John Cena won the 2013 Royal Rumble on the same night that The Rock defeated WWE Champion CM Punk - a hugely unpopular decision in itself. The build to the second match commenced thereafter, with WWE hoping to emulate the previous year's status as the most purchased 'Mania ever, but it was eyeroll-worthy nonetheless and nowhere near as satisfying as the first bout.
