10 Times WWE Totally Fooled The IWC

4. Matt Hardy Jumps Edge

The Edge/Lita/Matt Hardy storyline ultimately ended in disappointment for the situation's most aggrieved party, but turned the other two into a monstrous heel duo.

Edge's affair with Lita, while morally reprehensible, ultimately proved to be one of the best things to ever happen to his career. He became one of the most universally loathed men in the business, catapulting him to a level of success he could only have dreamed of beforehand, though there's a chance a man of his talent would've eventually reached the main event anyway.

It all started on a memorable July 2005 episode of Raw, when Hardy returned unannounced, ambushing Edge backstage, then again during a match with Kane. He was eventually pulled away by security and tossed out of the building, but WWE did a great job of making it look legit. Everything from the shaky camera footage to the announcers' refusal to acknowledge Matt put it over big time, and everyone was fooled.

The implication was that Hardy had invaded Raw on his own, without the company's knowledge, which is ridiculous - WWE would never allow something like that to slip through the net. Regardless, swathes of "smart" fans bought into it at the time, and it got the feud off to a hot start.
