2. John Cena (2012)

WWE boxed itself into a corner by booking John Cena to win the 2012 Money in the Bank match.

Admittedly, they would be in that corner regardless of who walked out with the briefcase. Nobody was clamouring for Kane and The Big Show to have another crack at top billing in 2012. Chris Jericho didn't stick around long enough to be a main eventer. The Miz, a night-of addition to the lineup, had only recently had his first go at the headline spot, and it resulted in one of the weakest WrestleMania main events ever.

It had to be John Cena.

But that wouldn't stop it from being lifeless.

Firstly, the finish. Cena appeared to win prematurely, given his panto-like shocked look when the hook detached from the briefcase as he thumped it into Big Show's big head. Then, the waste. WWE's goodiest of goody-two-shoes notified CM Punk ahead of time that he would cash in at Raw 1000 on 23 July, giving WWE a main event worth tuning in for if you didn't otherwise fancy celebrating Raw shifting to three hours every week - but then it ended in a no contest when The Big Show interfered, causing Cena to have the first failed Money in the Bank cash-in.

At least we got a rematch at SummerSlam, only with Show added in, because apparently disrupting the main event of the biggest WWE TV episode of the era meant you automatically received a title match.
