It's startling to think now, but there was a real chance that Vince McMahon could have ended up in jail following the charges against him for illegally supplying steroids to his wrestlers in the early-90's. It's not fantasy to say that Vince was preparing WWE for life without him at Titan Towers on a daily basis, even going so far as to install Pat Patterson as his liaison between prison and his pride and joy. Of course, McMahon was acquitted of all charges, and successfully avoided having to spend time behind bars, but there was a genuine chance that prison was looming for the boss, which would have changed a lot about the promotion. Imagine the public perception to the kid-friendly World Wrestling Federation if the figurehead was put in jail, for example - the company lost a lot of sponsors regardless of Vince being cleared, but would have been in a lot more trouble had he been found guilty. Younger wrestling fans likely look back to this time period as almost taking place in some alternate universe, and who knows if the ultra-successful Attitude Era would have come to fruition had Vince been put in a cell.
