Kurt Angle became the first name to be announced as part of the WWE Hall Of Fame’s Class of 2017 yesterday. Rumours suggest that he’ll soon be followed by the likes of Diamond Dallas Page, Rick Rude, and William Regal, but regardless of who else joins him, Kurt will likely stand as this year’s headliner, and it’s an overdue honour.

As great as it was to hear of Kurt’s imminent induction, restricting him solely to this year’s HOF ceremony would be the most disappointing way WWE could book his comeback. Fans have been waiting for his return from the moment he left WWE in 2006, and it has only intensified in recent years. For him to eventually return as an inductee only would be a huge letdown, and a real misuse of his talents.

WWE’s announcement was very telling in its use of the past tense, stating that Angle’s “wrestling ability was unparalleled,” and referring to his “storied career” like it’s already over. This suggests that WWE aren’t even considering using him for an in-ring role, but regardless, Kurt still has plenty to offer as a performer. Whether inside the ring or out, he’s somebody fans have been waiting years to see on their screens again, and it’d be a shame if his comeback was a one and done.
