10 Ways To Refresh WWE's Stale Television Product

3. Let The "Historic Moments" Come Naturally

One of the most tedious changes WWE have made to their programming in recent years is their insistence on “making history” and “creating moments.” The company are no longer content to let their storylines succeed on their own merit. Nowadays, almost everything that happens must be compared to a past event, and if WWE have the opportunity to break a record, you can guarantee they’re going to take it.

John Cena’s WWE Championship victory at the Royal Rumble was a cynical ploy done only to put him in the same conversation as Ric Flair. The same goes for The New Day’s lengthy WWE Tag Team Title run, with the last few months of their reign existing only to smash Demolition’s record, reducing the division to a tedious, predictable slog.

Instead of letting these moments come naturally, WWE will actively work towards them. They’re artificial rather than organic, and it’s impossible to take the supposed accomplishment seriously as a result. Moving back to a model that builds logical storyline conclusions over ramming history down our throats would represent a huge leap forward for the product, and help dispel much of the predictability that has crept-in over the past few years.
