10 Wrestlers Who Should Have Been Megastars By Now – But Aren’t
5. AJ Styles
Based on AJ Styles’ in-ring work, he’s easily the most talented guy on the WWE roster. However, given the nature of the beast, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the company views him as its one true megastar.
That much was made apparent in the lead up to WrestleMania 33, when they made the call to take the WWE title off of Styles and give it to Cena for a two-week throwaway reign.
Having Styles enter the biggest show of the year as world champion would’ve capped off an incredible debut year and cemented his standing as the company’s marquee guy. Instead, though, he found himself feuding with Shane McMahon in a ‘special attraction’ type match that, frankly, Styles was too good for.
Sure, it gave him a spot on the card, and facing a McMahon meant he was well and truly in the limelight, but it was a little too gimmicky for a guy of Styles' calibre and arguably hindered him from being viewed as the franchise player he deserves to be.
