When Vince McMahon purchased World Championship Wrestling in March, 2001, it really felt like a watershed moment in North American wrestling. WCW had been McMahon's biggest competition to date since taking over from his father, but aside from a few year period, they couldn't really supplant him. By buying WCW, McMahon created his own grappling monopoly. The effects were felt by more than just wrestling fans. It was a curious time to look on from the sidelines, but it must have been incredibly strange for those who had given years to World Championship Wrestling. One such man was David Penzer, who had worked since 1993 with the Atlanta-based organisation. When WCW went to the wire, Penzer took it very personally. Like many, the ring announcer was kept in the dark about WCW's future. Encouraged to log onto the then-WWF's official website by a friend, Penzer was horrified to learn that Vince McMahon had bought his employer for a paltry sum. Choosing to attend the final ever episode of Monday Nitro, David Penzer broke down in tears at his computer upon hearing the news.
