WWE usually sweep such news under the carpet, but their decision to air it as part of a storyline felt bold and fresh.

Had they done as many of us feared - and simply left Reigns' absence unexplained throughout the Battleground build-up - it would have resulted in a lopsided feud. The match itself could well have suffered as a result.

Instead, acknowledging the story allowed Seth Rollins' pettiness and Dean Ambrose's casual forgiveness to shine through, while humanising Roman at the same time - a quality he badly needed.
