Admittedly, Chris Jericho’s rise to the top was a fairly
rapid ascent. When he became the first-ever Undisputed Champion in WWE history
at Vengeance 2001, he’d only been with the company for a couple of short years.
So it may be hard to imagine his maiden world title win arriving any sooner, but there’s one particular instance in which handing Jericho the Championship wouldn’t have been a bad idea at all.
I mean, I guess technically they did actually hand him the belt. It’s just, they didn’t let him keep it in an official capacity.
In a match between Jericho and Triple H on Raw, and after the Game had roughed up senior official Earl Hebner, Jericho capitalised to hit the Lionsault, which was met by a speedy three-count from the obviously-aggrieved Hebner.
The resultant pop remains one of the loudest in Raw history, creating a moment that no one’s going to be forgetting in a hurry. The decision, however, was reversed before the end of the night, with the title remaining with Triple H.
I guess the reason for keeping the belt off Jericho was that he’d just have had to lose the title straight back to the Game, and they didn’t want to use him as mere fodder for Triple H. Instead, he’d win the title a year and a half later, before they then used him as mere fodder for Triple H…
