9. Kevin Owens Wants Ezekiel Or “Elrod”
Something trippy happened shortly after WrestleMania 38 was all wrapped up. Former guitar-playing songsmith Elias appeared as a clean-shaven and clean cut looking individual on the 4 April Raw. Only, this wasn't Elias, or so he claimed. Nah, it was his brother Ezekiel, and he vowed to make his sibling proud.
Kevin Owens was having none of it.
A furious KO refused to believe that Ezekiel was a different person to Elias despite an edited segment showing the “brothers” together on the 20 June show. Being honest, the whole gimmick was objectively terrible, but Kev’s outraged reaction and his promo over the summer was a rare glimmer of light for the rebranded character.
Cutting through the noise with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, Owens demanded a match vs. Elias, Ezekiel or even another fictional brother he called "Elrod". That earned a laugh from fans in attendance for Raw. Being fair, they were in on the gag, and everyone appreciated that KO was being booked as someone who staunchly refused to play 'silly wrestling heel who takes everything at face value'.
WWE played the whole deal like Owens was simply losing his mind as everyone seemed content to treat "Ezekiel" like a different human being to Elias. Some of the comments Kevin made about shaving, other family members and more rescued the crumbling Ezekiel offshoot temporarily.
This is the true power of KO. He can make magic out of mush when he wants to, and his attention to detail is unmatched in WWE circles. Let's hope Elias/Ezekiel/Elrod slipped him a thank you note behind the curtain.
