11 New Day WWE Moments We Won’t Soon Forget

10. Overcoming Vince McMahon's Original Gimmick

If you’ve been along for the New Day’s entire journey, then you’ll remember that Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E did not originally conceive of the group in the same way that they were first presented, and how they first appeared as the New Day was very different than how they got over and gained traction as an act.

In July 2014, Woods approached Kingston and E after a tag-team loss and suggested that they hadn't gotten anywhere by smiling, dancing and doing what they were told, saying they needed to just take. This strong-willed, aggressive group disappeared from television as quickly as they appeared, only to resurface several months later as a gospel-themed group, preaching and backed by a choir.

That stereotypical gimmick came from none other than Vince McMahon, bestowing them with characters the trio (and fans) hated from the jump. Crowds turned on this smiling group preaching positivity, which thankfully was exactly what they needed - McMahon was convinced that the gimmick would get over as a babyface act.

Their journey as aloof heels gave way to an eventual face turn, which was fueled by their entertaining shtick (more on that later). But the images of the blue-clad trio standing in front of a choir proselytising is indelible, if only because of how far they came from such a horrendous gimmick.
