One of the (many) problems with the Four Pillars AEW Championship match build ahead of Double Or Nothing was how difficult it was to suddenly back Sammy Guevara out of the blue.

Various attempts to get him over as a face had failed in the past, and this looked like it was going the same way, but might it have actually worked now there’s no threat of him dethroning MJF?

Suddenly the aw-shucks Father-to-be stuff felt real enough to resonate, especially when the mask slipped at Chris Jericho’s expense rather than Darby Allin’s. The Pillars shared a mutual respect that felt absent between Le Sex Gods, and old head Jericho set up next week’s really cool tag match to harness that.

A word on Jericho/Sting too - yet another wonderful use of industry icons in a company with a very, very good track record, getting Tony Schiavone to quickly confirm that they’d never even crossed paths in WCW let alone anywhere else was such a great detail for the viewers at home. Those in the building didn’t needed it - Jericho and Sting going bat-to-bat was more than enough.
