12 Things WWE Owes To Mick Foley

8. Being A Breath Of Fresh Air As 'Commissioner'

Having apparently retired from active in-ring competition, Mick Foley returned to play the role of an on-air authority figure in the Summer of 2000. He deserves praise for changing the role to suit himself. Most General Managers, Commissioners or wrestling authority figures are only out for themselves, and often act in a selfish, heel manner. That wasn't the case with Foley. Instead, he turned the gig on its head. As the happy-go-lucky, smiling Commisioner, Mick was a dorky reminder that wrestling is supposed to be fun. His tenure in the position only lasted until December, 2000. He was fired by Vince McMahon, a segment which played before loud booing. People were genuinely upset that the fun-loving 'Commish' was put out to pasture. Foley did return to the role towards the end of the WCW 'Invasion' angle, but it wasn't quite the same. His interactions with the likes of Kurt Angle, as well as Edge and Christian as Commissioner have become legendary. There was nothing remotely cool about Mick's work as an authority figure, but he played the role brilliantly. This opened the door for the likes of Teddy Long, another babyface authority character.
