8. Vince McMahon

On the heels of the 1997 Survivor Series, Vince McMahon was the most controversial figure in professional wrestling. The billionaire owner of WWE, he had been primarily responsible for the screwjob of Bret Hart that not only cost him the WWE Championship but saw him driven from WWE a man emotionally broken. Fans wanted answers, they wanted to know why McMahon did what he did to one of the most beloved stars to ever compete for his organization. In an infamous promo conducted shortly after the event, McMahon not only provided those answers, he also gave the WWE fans a taste of the Mr. McMahon character that would become the greatest heel in company history. When asked by interviewer Jim Ross why he screwed Hart, McMahon revealed in great detail everything that had occurred leading into the Survivor Series event. For the first time, the boss sat down and revealed to the fans some of the most controversial backstage happenings. He confirmed the reports of the so-called "dirt sheets" like The Wrestling Observer and Pro Wrestling Torch in the process, lending credibility to those publications. It was a single quote that would become synonymous with the Montreal Screwjob, though. "Bret screwed Bret. I have no sympathy whatsoever for Bret." The look of remorselessness in the eyes of the chairman's eyes was haunting and the directness with which he spoke led to the creation of the Mr. McMahon character. Never again would he be looked at as the innocent, wholesome interviewer and host of WWE's top programs.
