14. Jake 'The Snake' Roberts

Jake €˜The Snake€™ Roberts tends to be overlooked nowadays, but he was a fantastic character during the 80s and 90s and really helped WWE along the path to success. He€™s mainly remembered for his invention of the DDT, a move now utilised by everyone and their mother in the wrestling industry, but he was a really intriguing talent on the mic, and his in-ring psychology was top tier. Nothing he did felt like it was done just for the heck of it. He was methodical, every move meant something, and that€™s very important in this business. One of my favourite Jake Roberts€™ matches took place very early in his career, when he was just picking up speed and the fans were starting to get behind him. Fans were chanting to see the DDT after he€™d used it on Hogan, and so they had to split the two up to keep Hogan€™s popularity up where it was needed. Roberts would be placed in this Intercontinental Championship Match with €˜Macho Man€™, Randy Savage, in an unprecedented heel vs. heel match that only served to increase Roberts€™ stock in the company. Roberts wrestled so well that the fans actually rallied behind him instead of Savage, to the evident surprise of the commentators, and they got really into it whenever €˜The Snake€™ would use dirty tactics in the ring. You could hear their excitement when he pulled out Damian after a double disqualification, but the match itself was great as it turned Roberts into something of a dark horse fan favourite with mere actions over words.
