25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2023
14. A Crummy Double Or Nothing 'Unsanctioned Match'
AEW has a superb catalogue of grizzly, violent matches for a company so young. Be it the various 'Anarchy In The Arena matches', Bryan Danielson being suffocated with a bag, or Swerve Strickland and Adam Page tearing each other to shreds, AEW excels at adult-based professional wrestling with a vicious edge.
Chris Jericho and Adam Cole were booked in an 'Unsanctioned Match' at Double Or Nothing 2023 to pay off their feud. Coming hot on the heels of Jericho having an excellent 'Falls Count Anywhere' match with Roderick Strong that saw the pair brawling on the streets of Texas, excitement was justifiably high for that to escalate to new violent heights with Cole in Las Vegas.
Only that...didn't happen.
A never-ending series of run-ins, timid use of weapons, a laborious pace, and the unnecessary presence of ECW hardcore legend Sabu in the early part of the match all added towards making this a bout that was more squib than spectacle. For 2 performers who are usually so reliable, this was a match both men will want to forget on a card that was loaded with gimmick matches.
Adam Cole emerged with the victory, but it really felt like a night when both of these superstars lost significant ground.
