2. The Cage Gimmick Couldn’t Save Things
Sorry, but there was absolutely no call for Trick Williams vs. Baron Corbin in a steel cage.
Firstly, the spotty logic was all over the place: Michael Cole and Corey Graves spent a chunk of time talking about how Lil Yachty (of all people) would be a non-factor, but that didn’t prove to be true. Yachty slammed the cage door on Corbin to help Trick win. Sure, that was revenge for Baron booting the door into him earlier, but still. His perpetual interruptions are annoying.
Also, the fact it’s the babyface who repeatedly needs help from someone isn’t exactly doing much to make Williams look like a big deal. Just move on from this, and from the Trick with Yachty pairing. The rapper has become a hindrance to Williams. If anything, Yachty is a natural heel more than a face, and he may never be accepted as someone truly important by the core audience. Stop banging your heads against a brick wall, please!
Of course, this is just one writer's opinion. Others may feel differently, and they obviously do inside the writers room at WWE HQ. Fair play, but surely even they can see that none of this has elevated Trick to that next level. Here, the company shoved this feud inside the cage for the sake of it, then Cole and Graves tried to pass off Williams winning with Yachty's help as some coming of age moment for the United States Champion.
Nope, not having it. This rivalry has been another disaster for Trick, and he could've done without that after the wonky Gingerbread Man stuff with Sami Zayn.
