This week's episode of AEW Dynamite is to host "an important announcement" from company founder and president Tony Khan, as confirmed during last Friday's special 'Slam Dunk' Rampage show.
For those not already fatigued by Khan's propensity for marketing his own televised announcements, this will be one of the biggest hooks on a relatively lightweight card. Jon Moxley, Saraya, and The Acclaimed are all on deck, albeit against unfancied opposition. Orange Cassidy's All-Atlantic Title defence against Wheeler Yuta is admittedly less predictable, as is the Revolution Tag Team Battle Royal. Nonetheless, this isn't the stacked lineup fans had enjoyed through 2023's first five or six weeks.
Khan's Dynamite announcements have varied in size and scope since the show's October 2019 inception. From signings to shows (and the outright purchase of another promotion, as with ROH last March), they have frequently drawn mixed responses, though such is the state of modern discourse. The AEW chief could announce he'd discovered an infallible remedy for global warming on Wednesday and still face criticism.
Nonetheless, AEW's current situation makes Wednesday's statement appealing. With WWE hogging the US wrestling market's buzz and AEW's numbers stagnating, the company could use a shot in the arm.
