One of the biggest talking points coming out of WrestleMania 39 was the inexplicable decision to have Roman Reigns retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Heavyweight Championship, sending Cody Rhodes to defeat at what might be the peak of his popularity, a peak he quite possibly might never reach again.

The decision has been derided by many and defended by others, some of whom have legitimate interesting perspectives, and others who twist themselves into pretzels while holding up one finger.

Regardless, Roman’s 950+-day reign as champ will continue, mostly likely crossing the 1,000-day threshold and possibly even further. But Cody is not the first wrestler who fans completely bought as the man to topple Reigns and pry the titles off him. Throughout the past 31 months, there have been several men who have come tantalizingly close, and in hindsight perhaps should have dethroned the Tribal Chief. For one reason or another all of them came short.

Similarly, there are a handful of superstars who could in the future pry the title out of Reigns’ hands, wrestlers who could conceivably catch fire and finally end the longest title run in modern WWE history.

So, who are these superstars who should have and still could knock off the Tribal Chief? Keep in mind that we’re not suggesting that all or even multiple people on this list should topple Roman, but that any one of these men could do (or should have done) it.

Let’s get to it…
