6 Ups & 7 Downs From WWE WrestleMania 42 - Saturday (Results & Review)

2. McAfee The Referee

No matter how many times Cody Rhodes insisted that the WWE Championship feud wasn’t about Pat McAfree, the retired NFL punter and talk sports show host, WWE couldn’t stop talking about him.

Essentially, McAfee has become the WWE version of Poochie, constantly onscreen and referenced by others whenever he isn’t.

During the main event, McAfee was all over the place, getting his own entrance before Randy Orton, then grabbing the mic from Alicia Taylor to introduce Orton. Pat then blindsided Cody Rhodes before the bell to try to take the champ out. That backfired and led to Cody obliterating McAfee and setting him up for Jelly Roll to splash him through the table.

McAfee would then do a stretcher job and be wheeled out of the stadium – all before the bell even rang.

After a ref bump, McAfee returned, wearing a neck brace and a referee shirt to try to tip the scales in Orton’s favor. Inexplicably, Pat slow-counted Randy’s pin attempt in a match where, if the Viper lost, McAfee would leave professional wrestling. Orton repaid McAfee with an RKO.

That is an insane amount of time spent on Pat McAfee, a guy who has generated nuclear anti-heat, during the main event of WrestleMania.
