7 Wrestlers WWE Called Up In The WORST Way Possible
3. The Ascension
The Ascension are a tricky addition to this list. On the surface, a team that owes so much to the past is a tough sell for the more cynical and savvy audience that exists today. This is why presentation was everything when it came to putting Konnor and Viktor in a position to succeed. It's WWE's job to commit to selling these guys like the second coming of the Road Warriors if they wanted it to work.
Suffice to say, this is not what they did. At all.
The Ascension were former NXT Tag Champs, and their last match on the black and gold side saw them decimating Enzo Amore and Big Cass in 60 seconds flat. Both were sold as a scary, throwback team whose power came from the same source as the likes of 80s favourites Demolition and The Ultimate Warrior.
When the team debuted on SmackDown, the commentary team of Michael Cole and JBL essentially laughed at them and dismissed them as bad rip-offs of better teams from the past. This was followed by The Ascension being fed to not only the decrepit New Age Outlaws, but also JBL as part of the APA weeks after debuting. It left their reputation in tatters and meant they never had a chance of receiving the same kind of retro cool that The Revival managed with ease.
