2. Braun Strowman (2018)

There was a time during the late 2010s when Braun Strowman’s popularity among fans easily eclipsed Vince McMahon’s golden boy, Roman Reigns, with their encounters becoming viral moments (anyone remember Braun tipping over the ambulance with the Big Dog inside?).

It stood to reason that when Strowman won the Money in the Bank briefcase in 2018 and Reigns won the Universal Championship at SummerSlam, the two would collide soon enough. After a couple of failed cash-in attempts, Braun went the Rob Van Dam route and turned over the briefcase for a PPV title match, this time at Hell in a Cell.

In the eponymous match, Strowman and Reigns battled inside the cell while The Shield fought with Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler. Then, just when the shenanigans seemed to die down, Brock Lesnar appeared and kicked in the cell door, then proceeded to wipe out both men with F-5s (and Paul Heyman pepper-sprayed guest referee Mick Foley for added insult to injury). A second ref ruled that neither Strowman nor Reigns could continue, resulting in a no-disqualification cell match ending in a no contest. Seriously.

That was a horrendous booking decision that was rightly derided at the time and has not aged better over time. This coming the year after Baron Corbin’s failed cash-in didn’t help matters either, exposing the Money in the Bank gimmick as potentially having run its course.

Strowman would have to wait more than a year to finally capture his first world title, which came during the pandemic-era WrestleMania 36 as a replacement for… Roman Reigns.
