9 Things SummerSlam Must Do To Eclipse NXT Brooklyn
7. Focus On The Storytelling
Contrary to what WWE often likes to tell us, it isn’t necessarily those “memorable moments” alone that turn a good show into a great one. Sure, they help, but on top of all that, it’s compelling storytelling that really gets fans invested in an angle, a storyline or even just a single match.
And, in a sentence that I seem to be thinking a lot today, just take NXT for example.
At Takeover: Brooklyn, we saw Andrade Cien Almas face Johnny Gargano in a seemingly routine singles bout, which soon evolved into a tale of Almas’ struggle to stop his showboating from coming back to bite him. There was also the added subtext of Zelina Vega and her role at ringside in turning Almas into the finished article, before the match ended with a subtle reminder that Gargano himself isn’t quite over the breakup of Team DIY.
Details like that turn a run-of-the-mill match into a relatable story which makes the action itself mean so much more. Maybe this all sounds a little melodramatic, or maybe NXT just writes interesting storylines.
Either way; here’s hoping SummerSlam follows suit this weekend.
