Becky Lynch Knew Charlotte Flair Was Going To Disrespect Her, Admits "Losing It"
Becky Lynch dives into her reported backstage confrontation with Charlotte Flair on the MMA Hour.
Becky Lynch has told Ariel Helwani that she knew Charlotte Flair was going to "purposefully disrespect her" during the belt swap gone wrong on the 22 October episode of WWE SmackDown.
Interviewed on today's episode of The MMA Hour, Lynch when into detail on the situation, which was followed by a reported backstage blow-up between the two after Flair had gone off-script to drop the Raw Women's Championship on the ground. Prior to this, Charlotte had expressed concerns about being made to look weak by trading belts with Lynch.
When Helwani asked Lynch if she felt disrespected by the incident, Becky revealed she called what would happen before her, Flair, and Sonya Deville hit the ring for their segment:-
“There was a plan in place that was supposed to go one way and if it went one way then everyone would have had a moment, and it would’ve been great. I, in the back, said ‘this isn’t gonna happen. She’s gonna do something else,’ and she did exactly what I said she was going to do.”
The Raw Women's Champion continued, saying that while she was able to stay composed as the angle played out, she "lost it" when they got backstage:-
“Sometimes things can happen out there and people can get carried away in a moment. You don’t really have time to process what happens but when I knew that there was going to be purposefully… she was going to purposefully disrespect me, I processed it a lot quicker. And so I was able to hold it together until I got backstage, I did what I was supposed to do, and then when I got backstage I lost it a little bit.”
After explaining that she and her former best friend got into it verbally (in Becky's words, she had to work a dark match immediately after and "didn't have time to be scrapping in the back"), Lynch answered as follows when asked if Charlotte dropping the title belt bothered here:-
“The way it was handled. I would have to give you the whole story, but… look, it was supposed to go a certain way and when I saw it happening I was like ‘oh, I knew it, I knew it.’ And I’d told people beforehand that this was going to happen, she was gonna make it really hard to do this angle, and then it happened and so I just lost it. I lost it because I was able to process it because I knew that this was going to happen, I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to do my thing, and that… there was just no need for it. There was no need for it. At the end of the day, it wasn’t about me. It was about Sasha [Banks] and her getting into something and so I was like ‘what is the… this is just stupid, this is just ridiculous.’"
Continuing, Lynch went into the importance of being able to trust your opposite number in professional wrestling. She added that while others may not be in a position to speak up when things like this happen, she is, because she isn't afraid of Flair:-
"We need to be able to go out there and trust each other because that’s what this is. We need to to be able to trust that one person is going to do what they said they were going to do, because otherwise we’d be doing [MMA]. But we’re not doing [MMA], it’s professional wrestling and it’s a beautiful art that I love, and I love it more than anything and I love it for what it is. It’s telling stories through violence, essentially, and when somebody goes out and you can’t trust them to do what we’ve agreed on doing, then what are we doing? Because our bodies are in peoples’ hands. What we do is extremely dangerous. It’s extremely dangerous. And we’re trust somebody with our lives and okay, this segment wasn’t trusting somebody with out lives, but it’s the meaning behind it. It’s happened with other things and I just need to be able to trust somebody and when it happens to other people, maybe they can’t say something. But I can say something because I’m not scared.”
Becky answered "yes" when Helwani asked if Charlotte is difficult to work with. She gave the same response to the question if she is dreading facing Flair at Survivor Series 2021 (21 November) and if she's hoping the show will bring the end of the issue, before saying "we'll see" when the host enquired how difficult it'd be for her and Charlotte to get on the same page for the match.
Last week saw Becky tell SI that she was "okay being the hero" in this situation, confirming that she and Flair no longer talk.
