Following on from Dave Meltzer's Wrestling Observer Radio report that John Cena may be finished as a professional wrestler, PWInsider's Mike Johnson reports that upcoming acting commitments mean Cena is "done with future WWE appearances."

WWE is now progressing on the knowledge that John won't be available for the foreseeable future. There is currently no word on when he might return to the promotion.

Cena wrestled Universal Champion Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2021 this past week. His first televised WWE match in 17 months finished in around 23 minutes, with Reigns putting the 16-time World Champion away decisively, which served as a backdrop for Brock Lesnar's WWE return.

Appearing for the first time since April 2020, Lesnar's staredown with Reigns closed the show. The returnee then obliterated Cena after SummerSlam had gone off the air.

John returned to WWE programming at Money in the Bank 2021, setting his sights on Reigns and the Universal Championship. His Summer of Cena run will ultimately go down as a success for stimulating ticket sales in several markets, including New York City, where WWE had previously confirmed him for the 10 September SmackDown Supershow at Madison Square Garden.
