House of Black leader Malakai Black had teased Matthews' seemingly imminent arrival on the previous week's show, suggesting to stablemate Brody King that a new ally was on the way. This came mere hours after a Fightful Select report noting that Matthews was likely AEW-bound.

The tease was paid off last night, following King and Black's loss to Death Triangle members Penta Oscuro and PAC. The Kings of the Black Throne jumped their rivals afterwards. When the house lights came back up after a spell of darkness, Matthews was standing in the ring, and, after a pause long enough to bring his allegiances into question, unleashed violence upon the babyfaces.

Matthews closed the segment by stomping Penta's face down on a steel chair at Black's behest. Clearly, the former Buddy Murphy has been welcomed into the House of Black.

AEW president Tony Khan confirmed Matthews' signing following the angle:-

The 33-year-old has been a free agent since September 2021, when his 90-day non-compete clause expired following his WWE release that June. Now, he is off the market once more.
