Kenny Omega defeated AEW roster-mate Andrade El Idolo to retain the AAA Mega Championship at Triplemania XXIX on Saturday (14 August). Afterwards, the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer reported that Andrade was booked to win the strap until AEW blocked the move, not wanting Omega to lose on two consecutive shows after dropping the IMPACT World Title to Christian Cage the previous day.

Fightful Select have now followed up on this, confirming Meltzer's report and bringing new details to light.

The update states that Andrade was actually told he'd be winning the belt at one stage. This was presumably before AEW exercised their right to have the final say on Omega's outside bookings, flipping the outcome.

Speculation within AAA is that the decision may have had something to do with the ever-changing nature of AEW at the moment, following Christian's win, Hangman Page's time off, and incoming signings. On top of this, a number of wrestlers have indicated to Fightful that AAA knew Omega would be going over as early as July.

As far as Omega's next Mega Championship challenger goes, El Hijo Del Vikingo has been mentioned, though nothing is certain yet. This bout was teased at last year's Triplemania show, on which Omega successfully defended against Laredo Kid.
