Kenny Omega defeated Andrade El Idolo to retain the AAA Mega Championship at Triplemania XXIX this Saturday (14 August). It was the Canadian's fifth successful defence in over 600 days, but it almost didn’t come to pass.

Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Andrade was originally booked to defeat Omega and unseat him as AAA’s top champion. This was until AEW stepped in and asked AAA to hold off.

As Kenny’s home promotion, AEW has control over his match results in other companies. The Tony Khan-helmed group didn’t want the 37-year-old losing on two consecutive nights after dropping the IMPACT World Title to Christian Cage on AEW Rampage’s 13 August episode. Thus, the champ went over.

While there is currently no word on when Omega’s next AAA Mega Championship defence will be, he and Cage will contest the AEW Title at All Out 2021 on 5 September.

Triplemania XXIX was the first time Andrade and Omega have ever wrestled. It was a notable bout not only for this, but because it saw Ric Flair make his first non-WWE appearances since leaving the promotion on 3 August. The 72-year-old attacked Kenny and cornerman Konnan during the contest in his first physical spots in years.
