22. WrestleMania 20 | An Uninvited Guest

This entry is more sad than anything else. 

Vince McMahon, very famously and even more suspiciously, ruled out ever bringing ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage back. You’ve all read about the nefarious rumour involving the statutory rape of Stephanie McMahon. Many people are prepared to substantiate that on the rather flimsy basis that no other wrestler, even those deemed to have shared an even more fractious relationship with Vince, was entirely blackballed. This argument fails to acknowledge CM Punk, but regardless: Vince would not relent. Under no circumstances would Savage ever work for him again. According to an interview Savage granted for Razor magazine in February 2004, this was a one-sided feud. 

Savage was asked about his participation at WrestleMania 20, saying “WrestleMania is where it’s at. If Vince McMahon invited me to participate in WrestleMania 20, I’d do a crazy flip flop into the air and say “Yeah!””

The phrasing there is a bit brutal. “Where it’s at” had fallen out of use, just as Savage had. A crazy flip flop into the air? Savage’s bizarre take on the language no longer felt endearing - just desperate. He was angling for a payday into the void. It’s hard to imagine Savage even keeping up with the product, spending his Monday nights watching Rob Conway. 

In an additional, less grim secret lost to time, Dave Meltzer reported in the February 2, 2004 Observer that Vince McMahon was originally slated to manage Kane in his match against the Undertaker.

Savage did have one influential supporter in WWE, however…
