Ronda Rousey UFC 207 Defeat - 7 Things We Learned
4. Women's MMA Has Passed Rousey By
The biggest question to ask coming out of UFC 207 is simple: Why did Ronda Rousey lose, again? It may seem strange, but the answer is easy: the sport has evolved, and passed her by.
This isn't something new to MMA. The sport is still in its infancy, just a few generations of fighters in. In the past, fighters were single-discipline specialists. Boxers, kickboxers, wrestlers, jiu-jitsu fighters.
Rousey comes from that mold. She made her bread and butter from her Judo, using a judo toss to put opponents on the ground, then locking in an arm-bar. Yes, some of her later victories came by way of strikes, but against opponents who did not have high level striking themselves. And so fans were sold on the fact that Ronda Rousey was a well-rounded fighter. She wasn't.
Meanwhile, the current crop of females in the divison - fighters like Amanda Nunes, Julianna Pena, Valentina Shevchenko - are true, multi-discipline mixed martial artists. They can excel on the ground and on the feet.
Rousey cannot. Her striking is still sloppy. Her head movement is not existent, her footwork awkward. When she cannot utilize her judo, she is in deep trouble, and Nunes proved that.
